The basic principle with regard to rulings on matters of worship is that they are either Sunnah or bid‘ah (innovation), i.e., they were either narrated from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) or they were not.

 

Whatever was the practice of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is Sunnah, and whatever was not part of the religion at the time of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions is not part of the religion for us today.

 

Al-‘Irbaad ibn Saariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:

 

مَنْ يَعِشْ مِنْكُمْ بَعْدِي فَسَيَرَى اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الْمَهْدِيِّينَ الرَّاشِدِينَ ؛ تَمَسَّكُوا بِهَا ، وَعَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الْأُمُورِ ، فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مُحْدَثَةٍ بِدْعَةٌ ، وَكُلَّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ


“Whoever among you lives after I am gone will see great disputes; you must adhere to my Sunnah and the way of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. Hold on to it and cling fast to it. And beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a going astray.”

***** NO GOSSIP MONGER WILL ENTER PARADISE The motive in spreading gossip is either ill will towards the person of whom one speaks or to show love to the person to whom one speaks, or to indulge in unnecessary talk and falsehood. All of that is haraam. There is a great deal of evidence in the Quran and Sunnah (prophetic traditions) to show that gossip is haraam (impermissible), such as the verses in which Allah says: وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ “And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer.
