Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah
(swalla-Allaahu alayhi wa-sallam) said,
(( إنَّ بَيْنَ الرَّجُلِ
وَبَيْنَ الشِّرْكِ والكفر ، تَرْكَ الصَّلاَةِ ))
"Between a man and unbelief and paganism is the abandonment of Salaat
(five-times daily obligatory prayer”.
[Reported by Saheeh Muslim, Hadith # 82, 134 (1/61-62)]
He who will be having the quality of Islam and will
be particular in performing Salaat (five-time daily obligatory prayer)
regularly, will raise a wall between himself and unbelief.
He who does not perform Salaat after coming to the
fold of Islam, does not have a frontier which separates him from infidelity.
Leaving Salaat is like demolishing the wall that
separates Islam from unbelief (Kufr). This makes the importance of Salaat in
Islam abundantly clear.
Buraidah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (swalla-Allaahu alayhi wa-sallam) said,
(( العَهْدُ الَّذِي بَيْنَنَا
وَبَيْنَهُمْ الصَّلاَةُ ، فَمَنْ تَرَكَهَا فَقَدْ كَفَرَ )
"That which differentiates us from the
unbelievers and hypocrites is our performance of Salaat (five-time obligatory
daily prayer). He who abandons it, becomes an unbeliever”.
[An authentic Hadith related by Sunan Al-Tirmidhi,
Hadith # 261, Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith # 1079, Sunan Al-Nasaie (1/231), Sunan
Al-Kubra, Hadith # 325].
Shaqiq bin ‘Abdullah reported: The Companions of
the Messenger of Allah (swalla-Allaahu alayhi wa-sallam) did not consider the
abandonment of any action/deed as unbelief (kufr) except the Salaat (five-time
daily obligatory prayer).
[An authentic Hadith related by Sunan Al-Tirmidhi,
Kitaab Al-Eemaan, Tuhfat Al-Ishraaf # 15610, Tahdheeb Al-Kamaal # 3321 (2/162)]
The opinion of the Companions of the Prophet
(swalla-Allaahu alayhi wa-sallam) was based on the information contained in the
above mentioned Hadiths. They considered abandonment of Salaat as unbelief
(Kufr) and apostasy and regarded Salaat a symbol of Islam
